Friday, March 24, 2000 - Three out of four coaches agree:  This is Downingtown's year
So, is this finally the year of the Whippet? Well, three of the four baseball coaches in the Ches-Mont League certainly think so.  And the fourth, Downingtown's Brian Stackhouse, has been around long enough to know you never take preseason predictions too seriously. . .

Monday, May 1st:  The main concern of torrid Whippets:  Too much Pitching
Downingtown Baseball coach Brian Stackhouse has one of those "nice" problems that coaches dream about.

"I can't find any innings for Dan Armstrong," Stackhouse said.  "He had a fantastic American Legion season last summer.  And he's our closer.  But with the way we're playing, and with the way Scott Rambo and Scott Tyler are pitching, I just can't find the innings for Army.  And he's right there [in talent] with Rambo and Tyler."

Wednesday, May 10th:  Downingtown Rolls toward title
The Whippets Kept their Ches-Mont record perfect (6-0) by shutting down the West Chester East Vikings 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon.  They upped their season record to 15-1.

Scott Rambo (W, 6IP, 2H, 7K, 2BB) got the start on the mound and was in charge, earning his 6th victory with no defeats.  He got a great defensive play in the 2nd inning as LF Tom Brophy fired a relay to 3BMan Dan Sharkey who threw a strike to catcher Dave Gibbons, which nailed a Viking runner at the plate to end the inning.  Rambo had four 1-2-3 innings.

Rambo (2-3, 2 RBI, HR, R) also started the Whippet offense as he hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 1st.  The 4th inning started with Keith Carter (1-3, DBL, R) double.  J.R. Potter (1-2, RBI) drove him in with a 2-out single. Scott Navarro (10-3, HR, RBI, R) added another run in the 5th with a bomb over the LF wall.  Bob Lewis, Matt Smith and Brad Helm (2-4, 2RBI, DBL) all had hits in the 6th to add 3 more Whippet Runs.

Friday, May 12th:  Coaches remember field and its players
It's hard to know where to start when talking about the varsity baseball field at Downingtown High School where so many great players and great coaches played in so many games.

Does one start with the players who played there?  From Downingtown there were hitters like Tommy McCool, Bill Dague, Chris Rosfelder and Steve "Beaver" Long, just to name a few, and pitchers like Mike Torrance, Chris Watts, Wally McCue, Mike Sciaretta, and Tim Hardy - again, just to name a few.  Torrance is still involved with Downingtown baseball as an assistant coach with the varsity team.

Tuesday, May 16th:  Whippets clinch Ches-Mont baseball championship
The Downingtown Whippets captured the Ches-Mont Championship with a convincing 9-2 victory over the Henderson Warriors.  This ends the 7 year reign of the Coatesville Red Raiders.

The Whippets were led by Senior Pitcher Scott Rambo (W, 4IP, 2H, 5K) who upped his season record to 7-0.  Dan Armstrong (3IP, 1H, 4K) threw the last 3 innings to seal the victory.

Rambo (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R) also starred for the Downingtown offense with a 2 run homer in the 4th.  The whippets were paced by Junior centerfielder Matt Smith (1-2, HR, 3 RBI, 2R, HBP) who hit is 2nd homer of the year and notched his 12th HBP, a new school record.  Nate Sharpless (2-2, 2R) and Keith Carter (2-4, RBI R) Also had multiple hit games.

Tuesday, May 23rd:  Playoff Opener is a Success
Downingtown opened the District 1 Playoff Tournament with a 9-2 victory over Wissahickon.  The win was the first in the District Play for Coach Stackhouse.

The Whippets were led by Junior Scott Tyler's (W, 5IP, 2H, 10K) strong performance on the hill.  Tyler was total command of the Trojans, fanning the first 6 batters of the game to add to his total of 10 strikeouts.  He now has the school's season record for strikeouts (which was formerly held by Pitching Coach Mike Torrance).

Offensively the Whippets were in Charge from the start, scoring 4 first inning runs, RBI singles by Scott Rambo (2-3, 2 RBI, 2R), Keith Carter (1-2, 2 RBI, 2R) and Tom Brophy (1-3, RBI) did the 1st inning damage.

The Trojans were finally put on ice in the 5th inning when first baseman Nate Sharpless (1-3, HR, 4 RBI, R) hit a grand slam homerun over the LF wall to put D-Town up 9-1.

The Whippets will continue on in the District 1 Playoff Tournament tomorrow, 5/24/00, against today's winner between Unionville HS and Haverford HS.
