DHS
nine defeated in District 1 playoff
"Pennsbury deserved to win after hitting us like
they did," said DHS baseball Coach Carl Houp after
his team's 12-6 loss in the District 1 play-offs.
"They hit us like we hit Boyertown. And today,
we were complacent in the field."
Pitcher Mike
Sciarretta allowed four hits in the first four
innings, including a double and a triple which gave
Pennsbury a third inning one-run advantage. in
the fifth inning, they scored three additional runs
on a single and two doubles.
But, the Whippet
offense came back with runs by Jamie Bogush, Jerry
Klein, and Joel Ashinhurst. "I have to give
our kids credit," Houp said. "They never gave
up. They came back with those three runs to
give us a shot at a win."
However, the sixth
inning proved to be the back-breaker as the pitching
team of Chris Watts and Sciarretta gave up eight
hits and eight runs before Pennsbury took the field.
In the bottom of the inning, Drew Parvin, running
for Kim Prusack, Klein and Ashinhurst added three
runs to the Whippet tally.
"We couldn't put the
first runner on," said Houp. The Downingtown
nine had eight hits and seven additional base
runners. However, Pennsbury's three pitchers
combined for nine Whippet strikeouts.
"We got beat by a
good club," Houp commented. "It's a shame we had to
meet them so early in the tournament."
"We did get the big
one Tuesday," Houp remarked, referring to his team's
7-0 victory over Boyertown. With the decisive
win, the Whippets defended their Ches-Mont crown.
Downingtown banged out 14 hits. And pitcher
Chris Watts gave up only four hits, while he struck
out nine Boyertown batters.
Greg Runyen sparked
the Whippet offense with a run in the third inning
on a single by Thor Cheyne. Klein
and Ashinhurst added two more runs in the fourth on
an Ashinhurst triple and a Watts single. Cheyne and John Chilla tallied in the
fifth on a single by Chilla and a double by Bogush.
Watts and Shane McCusker scored in the sixth on
Chilla double.
Houp's sluggers
compiled a 19-3 record this season. Seven of
his men, Watts, Sciarretta, Ashinhurst, Runyen,
McCusker, Cheyne and Klein graduate with an
impressive two-year record -- 40 wins and 5 losses,
two consecutive Ches-Mont championships and a
District championship. |
